On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Square1 hosted its Annual NEXT Final Pitch Event at Thomas More University.
The competition was a chance for students to showcase their efforts for the school year of 2023-2024. Parents, teachers, and judges watched as students presented innovative ideas they had worked on for the past seven to eight months.
The event was split between four divisions: a five-minute pitch division that competed for the opportunity to win a four-year full tuition scholarship from Thomas More University, a two-minute pitch division for students to compete for $1,000 in cash prizes, and two “Tabletop” Divisions where students interacted with judges directly.
For many, presenting their idea was an opportunity to showcase innovations with social impact, with one Tabletop division dedicated to ideas for positive social change.
The event, presented by US Bank, was a unique experience for all students, allowing them mentorship opportunities, advice on their ideas, and future partnerships. “US Bank is proud to support our next generation of changemakers and innovators,” explained Tony Knies, Vice President at US Bank and Square1’s board chair. He continued, “Our employees have been very impressed with the students’ development throughout the program.” US Bank employees and many others from the community participate as judges and assist in organizing the final event. Overall, several dozen mentors and coaches guide the students as they develop key skills that will aid them in school, career, and life.
This year saw the introduction of new awards, including the Aviatra Women-led award, and a “Wildcard” pitch. The “Wildcard” gave students who did not make the main stage a chance to impress our judges and get moved to the five-minute pitches to compete for the four-year, full tuition scholarship to Thomas More University.
“I was really inspired by your mission,” said Jill Morenz, President and CEO of Aviatra Accelerators, an organization that mentors women-owned businesses, as she presented the women-led award to the team of Nutritional Soul.
This year’s four-year full-ride Thomas More University scholarship was presented to Megan Crosby of Copilot, an innovative product that assists first-time car drivers.
Scholarships of $25,000 and $22,000 were presented to Henry Hudepohl and Cono Presti of ViteRight, a team from Beechwood High, and to Bene Gyan of Get Connected, a Walnut Hills High School student entrepreneur, respectively.
The event also featured Paul Powers as a keynote speaker, Founder and CEO of Physna, a company that uses machine learning to understand and improve 3D models. He spoke to the students about his entrepreneurial journey and the importance of overcoming setbacks.
Square1 plans to continue to reach students in the 2024-2025 school year. Square1’s NEXT program strives to teach an entrepreneurial mindset to students across Northern Kentucky and the Cincinnati region.

Did you know that there are skills and knowledge that can transcend the average classroom?
This idea stimulates the economy and affects the lives of millions of people every day across the nation
Entrepreneurs are fueled by innovation and defined as creators of small businesses. The number of small businesses is substantial, standing at 33.2 million in total and making up 99.9% of all businesses in the United States. Notably, they serve as a major player in the growth of the economy, generating nearly half of all workers in the country at 61.2 million in 2022.
It is unsurprising to assume that some will inevitably fail. In fact, only about 40% of small businesses will be successful due to many not having access to consistent capital. Because of this harsh reality, entrepreneurship education is proactive as it teaches not only the professional skills needed to start a business, but how to mitigate risks and maximize opportunities long-term to be sustainable.
Consider the additional advantages that come with teaching entrepreneurship before your typical college classroom, but instead as early as elementary school. Entrepreneur education equips learners with the confidence and knowledge to face uncertain professional situations that often do not have definite answers.
Through entrepreneurial education, students learn earlier on to think outside the box by identifying their strengths, applying their working knowledge towards their interests and collaborating with others who have differing expertise; all necessary skills to prepare them to enter the workforce. This may take the shape of practicing public speaking skills, creating professional networks, exploring secondary education and potential career paths, learning about racial and social barriers and many more possibilities.
As a result of this focus, learners are empowered to use their best judgment to find innovative strategies and solutions to overcome complex problems and start thinking about that next phase of life.
NEXT is a year-long program that presents an opportunity for students to spark their entrepreneurial journey through partnership with local middle schools and high schools in the greater Cincinnati region. While there, students can expect education centered in youth development that takes on the challenge to build purposeful learning because we understand that not every student begins at the same starting line.
The unfortunate truth is that 59.9% of students that reside in Kentucky and 48.4% of students in Ohio are economically disadvantaged. These realities are even more pronounced among students of color and students in rural communities who have less access to school funding, technology tools and educational opportunities.
NEXT recognizes this inequity and strives to provide agency for underserved youth that are fighting generational poverty and the opportunity gap by serving both urban and rural schools. To date, our program has impacted more than 700 students annually with 61% of students participating in the free/reduced-price lunch program and 51% of learners representing a racial minority.
There are so many avenues to explore with NEXT ranging from forming their own business ideas to solve community needs, presenting in pitch competitions to peers and local professionals and the potential to earn scholarship funds to pursue their post-secondary goals. When finishing up the program, students can expect to be introduced to professional networks, understand how to manage a LinkedIn profile, identify potential internships and career pathways, and best of all, newfound confidence to take on rising opportunities and challenges.
We recognize that starting your own business is not for every student, however there are endless kinds of benefits to being taught these skills that are transferable to all walks of life. This is evident in the 98.39% of students who reported that they felt the program positively impacted their overall academic performance and 89.5% felt more equipped to make academic and career decisions.

Hundreds of high school students are getting a crash course in innovation and entrepreneurship in the hopes of winning scholarships to Thomas More University through Square1’s NEXT business development program. NEXT is a youth development program that utilizes innovation and entrepreneurship skills in preparing the next generation to lead, create, and succeed in competitive academic and business environments. Schools looking to engage with Square1 can do so through the Jan. 31, 2023, deadline for the upcoming contest.
“Square1 gives students the opportunity to step outside the classroom and experience real business situations,” says Sandy Roark, teacher at Beechwood High School. Square1 provides unique experiential learning opportunities and paid internships to students allowing them to see firsthand how a small company operates, including social media, design, and sales opportunities.
Through regular workshops, NEXT educates students to learn how to identify problems, create ideas, and design their paths. Students will have the opportunity to work in a collaborative team environment while building their own brand. All of these skills are identified specifically by employers as not only valued but essential for success. Keith Schneider, entrepreneur and Square1 president, believes that inspiring students to be innovative and motivated changemakers is crucial to the future of our communities. “It is truly amazing to see what their students are capable of once the light comes on and they start working from a perspective of what is possible versus what is not,” explains Schneider.
The NEXT program concludes with a contest series where students compete in a Shark Tank-like pitch contest to advance to a regional contest, where over $600,000 in scholarships, cash prizes, and more are to be awarded. The 2023 NEXT Final Pitch event will be held at Thomas More University the evening of March 23.

This year’s program saw more than 30 schools and 600 students participate in Greater Cincinnati’s region-wide innovation and work skills development program.
Contest successfully moved online due to COVID-19.
Winner’s included students from 2 first-year participants in Finneytown and Holy Cross High Schools.
Square1 is seeking schools for the 2020-21 year with more program enhancements and opportunities to benefit the students.
Square1’s high school program saw its best, most impactful year yet with significant growth in schools and the number of students served. Starting the year as Startup Scholars, the program had participating students rebrand the curriculum to NEXT. The rebrand was needed as the Startup Scholar name no longer represents the core benefits of the program.
“Startup Scholars was strictly an entrepreneurship program at the beginning,” explains Square1 President Keith Schneider. “We saw a significant need to grow our next generation of entrepreneurs, and still do, however the tools and skills these kids were learning extend well beyond entrepreneurship.”
NEXT still dives into entrepreneurship and startups even going so far as to host an annual pitch contest. NEXT also supports student development from a career, social, and even emotional perspective. Basic business etiquette and work skills are included in the workshops and activities the students participate in. Additionally, they receive coaching and mentorship that helps shape ideas and fuel their career and academic interests. And through a variety of networking events, the students engage with each other and community leaders opening doors that many would not have access to if not for Square1.
The events blend students from a variety of schools around Greater Cincinnati melding a range of socioeconomic backgrounds from inner city to parochial to technical schools. This year’s pitch contest winners represent this diversity and include:
First Place – Heat It! A tech-enabled lunch box allowing for a better, healthier variety of meals on the go.
(Jason Hackman and Jonah Ikeda from Covington Catholic High School)
Second Place – Pirate Protection. A secure way to receive packages even when you are not home at the time of delivery.
(Grace Martin, Kara Krumpelman, Carter Wahl, and Gaven Steward from Holy Cross High School)
Third Place – Drippy Lips. A (revenue-generating) vegan cosmetic line that helps provide cosmetics for people who cannot use harsh chemicals in their cosmetics and who are multiethnic.
(Noemi Yisra’EL from Finneytown High School)
Aviatra Accelerators Female-Led Innovation Award – CampusDoc. An app to ease the burden of health information management for college students.
(Kate Joyce, Briana Seibert, Isabelle Bailey, and Phoebe Boyle from Notre Dame Academy)
Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award – D’Straw. A patent-pending straw that discreetly detects drugs in beverages.
(Maddie Whaley and Hollie Lane from Holmes High School)
Innovation Award – Priceless Protection. A school security and emergency management products company.
Paterno, Rhett Schneider, and Joe Stegman from Covington Catholic High School)
These teams persisted as the contest was moved online due to COVID-19. More than $4,000 was awarded through the NEXT program thanks to the generous sponsors of Square1 including St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Orchestrate Technologies, MCF Advisors, US Bank, Northern Kentucky University, and Taft Law.
Yet another nonprofit, SQUARE1, has been impacted by the Coronavirus. SQUARE1 had its semi-final event slated to occur on March 12 at Gateway Community & Technical College which was canceled based on Kentucky Governor Beshear’s recommendation regarding large events. The Final Next Pitch Event was scheduled for April 3rd is being postponed.
This pandemic is affecting many non-profits, startups, and small businesses nationwide. The lessons SQUARE1 teaches will allow their students to be resilient through these types of challenges and also to have the mindset to produce solutions.
“To teach an entrepreneurial mindset is to teach resilience and adaptability,” explains SQUARE1’s President Keith Schneider. “We need to be innovative in creating a solution to complete the experience for the hundreds of kids in the program by providing this amazing opportunity.”
In true entrepreneurial fashion, SQUARE1 will be taking the semi-final team selection process online. The organization is still dedicated to hosting the final event and fulfill the experience for these students and the many sponsors like St. Elizabeth Healthcare and Orchestrate Technologies who are excited for and believe in the impact this program has on our Next generation. This is why your support of this program and this event are still needed now during this tough time.
The company’s mission is to uncover, educate, support, and inspire emerging entrepreneurs. This mission is achieved through their Next program by working with high school students to teach them how innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset can change their life’s trajectory. These students work during the school year to develop a project and then present their innovations in a series of pitch events.
The Final Competition event is not only your opportunity to witness the region’s top high school innovators pitch their ideas, Shark-Tank style, but it is also the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, allowing the organization to provide support to students not only in developing their ideas but continuing to nurture the key skills emphasized throughout the program. The event provides the students the opportunity to network and identify potential work opportunities, as many students are either unemployed or underemployed. The goal is to take these learnings to the Next level by placing these kids in internships and other career experiences including the launch of some of their ideas.
The Next program delivers an entrepreneur’s skill set to high school students that will benefit them no matter the career path they choose. Next runs entrepreneurial educational programs throughout Greater Cincinnati. Our goal is to reach into regional high schools offering curriculum to support idea generation, startup creation, and key career skill development culminating in the competitions to highlight these new skills for the community. Square1 is grateful for the support of community foundations such as the Charles H. Dater Foundation, The Sutphin Family Foundation, and the R.C. Durr Foundation.
